PROJECT #4 Front Garden
BEFORE
At the time we bought the house, there was this space at the front that my wife wanted to put in a garden. So, we kept the landscapers from putting in topsoil and I began trying to get all the aggregate rocks out.
The pandemic kept us from shopping for plants, so it was a good two yeas of waiting. |

During
Once the right plants were found, the job really began.
First, I had to clean out the area of all the rocks. These are the type that go under cement areas for support. Each time I dug close to the porch or sidewalk, the rocks would fall out, so as you can see, I had to haul in some mud from the lower part of the property to shore up the rocks which allowed me to clean it all out. At the far end, you can see where I had to dig down about 2 feet to find dirt and not rock. Then we can fill the area with good soil. We had priced out having a yard and a half of good river bottom soil brought in, but a local hardware store had these 1 cu ft bags 4 for $10. All totaled less than having it brought in AND more convenient. Additionally, we were able to control the type of soil as well as the exact amount. The bed is ready for flowers. |

After
Here you can see the flowers planted, Fire Engine Red Knock out Roses and Poppies The flowers were planted and then remay fabric was put down to keep the weeds to a minimum. On top of that we put a dark brown pine mulch. Also included are two 'stepping stones' made by the grandsons during the pandemic. |
